Two bedrooms, four children and two hardworking moms are trying to make life work in a Sacramento apartment. In the middle is 17 year old Grecia Frias. Her story is compelling. She had a life changing experience through what's called a parent-teacher home visit. Closing the Gap funded the visits conducted by the Parent Teacher Home Visit Project based in Sacramento. Counselors are paid overtime to go student’s homes for a face to face conversation with the parents about the necessary steps for the student to get prepared for college. Both Grecia and her mom had never discussed college, no less how to prepare and pay for it. One parent-teacher home visit changed Grecia’s destiny. She’s now on the path to a college career. Closing the Gap raises funds to grant to programs like the Parent Teacher Home Visit Project that are focused on closing the academic achievement gap in the Sacramento region. Local dollars raised to go to local programs making a local difference. That’s Closing the Gap.
